I'm told Aberdeen used to be a nice Scottish city with friendly natives, but now it's becoming crap thanks to all the English tossers who work in the offshore oil industry. Is this true?
Answers:
being an aberdonian who still lives in aberdeen i can answer this. however - i do think u r stirring it.
inabootcomers/white settlers have driven house prices way over what they should be. locals have problems getting good housing. cost of things like fruit etc is more expensive than in most places in England - which is a farce, Jimmy Chungs is cheaper in Glasgow than here.
however those in oil tend to go for the same sort of houses, the same schools, the same social life - and actually dont impact on the character of aberdonians at all.
the doric is alive and well and features in sell-out shows every year at His Majestys Theatre.
as for the world ending at Stoney? - if the Scottish Executive gave us a decent road then maybe it wouldnt. we have a wee airport and a crap rail service.
Unfortunately It's just another city that has fallen victim to English tossers- they are a growing breed and nature will eventually find a way to wipe them out (soon rather than later i hope )
Strange question as most of the Scottish tossers live in England!
how about we exchange, you can have your 2 million back for our 2 thousand!
My dad works in the oil industry and has often mentioned that Aberdeen is basically like a village with a street of pubs that some of the oil workers who have time off like to get drunk and have fights in. The hay day of the North sea oil industry has been and gone - Aberdeen is getting nicer and more tourist friendly all the time as there is less and less money to be had from the oil workers there and the businesses adapt.
No, it always WAS a stinking festering dump and 30 years of North Sea Oil money have done nothing to improve it.
Aberdeen truly deserves the title of "biggest village in Scotland". The people are notoriously mean and small minded- as our delightful questioner has just proved. There's only one street ( union street) and you enter this dump over a congested mediaeval bridge. The occupants of aberdeen- famously- think the world stops at stonehaven. The grey granite is depressing, especially when it is drenched in continual freezing rain AS IT SO OFTEN IS.
So don't say that aberdeen ever USED to be nice. I was there in 1963 and it was a dump then. If anything the English have improved it.
Who are you trying to impress?
Has anyone who's answered this question so far even been to Aberdeen? If you're looking for a English city in Scotland you might want to take a look at Edinburgh, where there are more English students at Edinburgh Uni than there are Scottish.
Aberdeen is a nice place (apart from the weather) and to me it's very Scottish! I have lived there and have not noticed all the English people you talk about.
I came to this question by pure chance but to be honest, I've never been there. So it's for somebody else to answer.
Why don't you ask the friendly natives if Aberdeen is a nice city and let them drum the answer into you!
well said N most of Scotlands been invaded but Aberdeens not so bad..try the outskirts ?
Well, sort of.
